Palladium, Mumbai set to host Spirit of Bombay an exhibition of sculptures by Valay Shende

India’s leading luxury shopping mall Palladium, in Mumbai will be opening Spirit of Bombay, an exhibition of Mumbai-based artist Valay Shende. The exhibition presents a series of large scale sculptures that draw upon the city’s indomitable spirit; images such as commuters in the infamously busy “Virar Fas”t local train and the iconic image of the dabbawala – the tiffin delivery men who have been an integral part of Mumbai’s landscape. Made from Shende’s signature style of assembling stainless steel discs, the sculptures are intended to create a dialogue around ongoing social issues in Mumbai whilst bringing people together in a celebration of the cities history, culture and ethos.

Best known in Mumbai for his landmark dabbawala public sculpture in the heart of Mumbai, Shende’s sculptures have found a presence in major private collections across the world. He has also exhibited at museums and galleries around the world including the Maxxi, Rome; The Serpentine Gallery, London; and the Museum of Modern Art, Oslo, Spirit of Bombay marks something of a homecoming for the artist, providing an opportunity share his distinct and recognisable works together, for the first time in Mumbai.

Continuing the theme of the city the exhibition will also mark the launch of DabbaWala Superhero an English and Marathi comic which has been designed as a celebration of the invaluable service of the dabbawala to the economy and ethos of the city. The comic aims to introduce the story of the dabbawala to a new generation. The exhibition will continue until 18 August 2019.
