Reviving Mosul’s Heritage: Restoration plans announced for Mosul Cultural Museum after devastating destruction
Plans for the restoration of the Mosul Cultural Museum in Iraq were announced at an international press conference at the museum this month. The cultural landmark and its prized collection of Assyrian antiquities are being brought back to life by an Iraqi-led international partnership after its violent destruction by Daesh in 2015.
The designs by architecture practice and heritage specialists Donald Insall Associates will honour the original vision of the Iraqi modernist architect Mohamed Makiya while making sensitive sustainability and accessibility upgrades to the building. A bomb crater in the main Assyrian Gallery caused by an attack will be preserved to commemorate the violence. A new multipurpose space for social exchange, dialogue, and learning will help establish Mosul as a vibrant culture centre, placing it at the heart of community regeneration efforts in Northern Iraq.
Flint is privileged to have worked alongside major cultural institutions from across the globe in this important project, including the Ministry of Culture of Iraq, the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage, the World Monuments Fund, the Musée du Louvre, the Smithsonian Institution and The International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (ALIPH).
