Ithra Museum launches immersive exhibition that sheds new light on the defining moment at the birth of Islam on its 1400th anniversary
Saudi Arabia’s landmark cultural centre The King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture (Ithra), launches Hijrah: In the Footsteps of the Prophet, a first of its kind immersive and multi-disciplinary experience of Prophet Muhammad’s journey from Makkah to Madinah fleeing religious persecution, the Hijrah.
Curated by Ithra’s in-house experts in collaboration with Dr Abdullah Hussein Alkadi, the world’s leading authority on the Hijrah, the exhibition traces the physical route of The Prophet’s journey through historical artefacts, immersive audio-visual technologies, newly-commissioned artworks, academic research, theatre performance and a cinematic retelling of the Hijrah. Bringing the human story of the Hijrah to the fore, the exhibition sheds enlightening perspectives on the moment that marked the beginning of the Islamic calendar and reflects the timeless themes of persecution, freedom, migration, danger, courage, love and companionship as well as regret, loss and duty.
Hijrah: In the Footsteps of the Prophet is Ithra’s first travelling exhibition and is set to travel across Saudi Arabia then globally during its 5-year run after the opening nine months in Ithra’s Great Hall.
