FRAMES of REPRESENTATION, the ICA’s annual international film festival opens today
The ICA’s film festival, FRAMES of REPRESENTATION, presents 20 premieres by filmmakers from 16 different countries, united in their desire to capture necessary stories and showcase human experiences from around the world.
This year’s theme of (Re)Imagining explores the craft of filmmaking at the crossroads of fabulation and collaboration, aiming to instigate discussions on issues such as social justice, race and gender inequality, politics, and the environment, among other urgent and global topics.
The festival also features masterclasses, workshops, performances and in-person
Q&As with nearly every director featured in the programme.
For the opening night, Payal Kapadia shares her bold and distinct Cannes award-winning debut feature A Night of Knowing Nothing, a powerful work denouncing the political contradictions of contemporary India; on 26 November, El Gran Movimiento is Kiro Russo’s Venice award winner folk horror and singular city symphony laying bare the plight of the Bolivian working class; a Malian film titled The Last Shelter by Ousmane Zoromé Samassékou follows the struggles of migrants in West Africa seeking escape out of the continent amid the harsh realities of the Saharan desert on 1 December; and on our closing night on 4 December, The Tale of King Crab (Re Granchio) by Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis, draws on the experiences of Italian immigrants in Argentina by way of a picaresque cinematic language, accounting for and reimagining a historical epic of lost love and lost treasure.
The ICA is dedicating a full day to the Italian cinema of the real on 27 November, starting with a workshop featuring filmmaker and producer Roberto Minervini who often takes us to the backyards of the American Dream; followed by a film screening and Q&A of Il Palazzo by Federica di Giacomo, which reconstructs the life of an artist in a commune in Rome; and a masterclass with Gianfranco Rosi as he discusses his vision of the cinematic language, with a special screening of his latest film Notturno to close the programme.
