Christie’s Biennale App

In 2010 Flint worked with leading digital agency M&C Saatchi mobile to develop a GPS-based iPhone App that enabled individuals to navigate the pavilions, parties and pavements of the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Building on the success of the original Biennale App, the following year Flint was commissioned by Christie’s auction house to develop the product as a Christie’s branded App for the 2011 Venice Art Biennale.  Working closely with a Christie’s team led by Francis Outred, International Director of Contemporary Art, Flint developed a digital product that was to become an integral feature of the Biennale experience, whilst also providing a powerful promotional channel for the client.

Press coverage for the project was secured across a broad media spectrum including The Art Newspaper, CondeNast Traveller, Vogue Italia, LA Times, the Guardian and the Financial Times, and the launch campaign was supported by extensive social media activity.

Luxury Daily wrote “Christie’s Biennale App builds goodwill by releasing a free service to art lovers and encouraging Biennale goers to view more exhibits and potentially buy more art.  The App adds value to Christie’s by implying that it has experts with fine art, and putting Christie’s name front-most in users’ minds when they want to buy a piece they saw at the Biennale”.

With over 380,000 people visiting the 2011 Venice Art Biennale, the Christie’s Biennale App provided a highly effective platform for the client to raise the profile of their brand and showcase their expertise.  Described by the Guardian as “an essential download”, the App was chosen by The Sunday Times as their No. 1 Arts and Museums cultural app of the year.

“My abiding memory of Biennales is walking the streets, in increasingly frantic circles, sifting through a stack of timetables, press releases and maps to try to find the next pavilion or event… All that is now a thing of the past, thanks to Biennale App”.
– Elias Redstone, Curator of the Polish Pavilion at the 12th Architecture Biennale and former Senior Curator at London’s Architecture Foundation
