The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced the 52 projects shortlisted for the 2026 International Awards for Excellence, celebrating world-leading architecture from 18 countries across five continents. The biennial awards recognise design that addresses some of today’s most pressing global challenges, from climate change and resource scarcity to social equity and rapid urbanisation.
The shortlist spans cultural landmarks, housing, education and infrastructure. Projects range from refugee arts centres and adaptive reuse schemes to net-zero campuses and carbon-neutral industrial facilities. Leading international practices, including Foster + Partners, Snøhetta and WOHA, feature alongside emerging and boutique studios, reflecting the breadth of innovation shaping the built environment today.
Across the shortlist, key themes emerge: reimagining civic and cultural spaces, advancing sustainable housing solutions, and embedding education and community at the heart of design. Many projects demonstrate how architecture can act as a catalyst for resilience, whether through low-carbon construction, adaptive reuse of existing structures, or community-led approaches that strengthen social connections.
