In early November, Flint Studio spent a week in AlUla documenting highlights from the Ancient Kingdoms Festival. Marking the start of AlUla’s culture season, the Festival attracts visitors worldwide with history-inspired experiences curated by top narrative experts. This year’s special highlight is the Incense Road Experience, an immersive, multi-sensory journey through the mud brick labyrinth of AlUla Old Town.
Our engagement with the Incense Road story began with the concept of a film, Incense in AlUla. The result is a poetic short film featuring AlUla’s historic connection to the incense trade—a commodity once considered more valuable than gold—and the lasting cultural legacy of this aromatic tradition. Crafted with cultural sensitivity, the film has been warmly received in AlUla and will be screened at the first ‘experience house’ of the Incense Road Experience.
As part two of the Incense Road story, we documented the making of the Experience and interviewed global talents like Creative Directors Pasha Shapiro and Ernst Weber of I.AM Studio (founded by Will.I.Am) and Marvel writer B.Earl, who helped shape a seminal chapter of the Experience, setting a new standard for historic storytelling in AlUla.
In addition to the films, the Flint Studio team produced a bilingual (English-Arabic) ‘What’s On’ guide and an ‘Explorer’s Map’ outlining the Festival’s sites and programme. Both have been hailed as must-haves for the Festival!
