Flint Culture develops conference programme celebrating cultural relations between Spain and the Arab world

We were thrilled to produce A Cultural Odyssey across Continents and Centuries: From Abu Dhabi to Madrid, via Tokyo to London, an academic conference hosted by the Sheikh Zayed Book Award (SZBA), in collaboration with Casa Árabe. The conference explored the rich cross-cultural exchange between Spain and the Arab world, and underscored the pivotal role of literature and music in cultural dialogue.

Held in Madrid, the event gathered renowned researchers, authors, and leading scholars from Spain and the Middle East to discuss the profound influence of the iconic Arabian Nights on Spanish culture and literature.

We worked closely with Casa Árabe to develop a dynamic conference programme, which gathered distinguished attendees, including HE Dr. Ali bin Tamim, SZBA General Secretary and ALC Chairman, Prof. Salvador Peña from the University of Malaga, and Prof. Paulo Lemos Horta from NYU Abu Dhabi. Additionally, Iraqi visual artist, Hanoos Hanoos delivered an audiovisual exploration inspired by his exhibition, Shahrazad and the Arabian Nights.

The conference concluded with a concert by acclaimed Lebanese artist Abeer Nehme, who performed to a full house. Recognised for her ability to blend Middle Eastern music and contemporary Western genres, Abeer fosters cultural and musical dialogue through her work within the MENA region and internationally.

Casa Árabe serves as the centre of cultural conversation between Spain and the Arab world and aims to promote relations between the two regions. It was announced as the 2024 Sheikh Zayed Book Award Cultural Personality of the Year for its work bridging the Spanish and Arabic speaking worlds through a programme fostering tolerance and respect for cultural diversity.

The Arabic Language Centre, part of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, focuses on the advancement of the Arabic language. It established the famed Sheikh Zayed Book Award, which honours writers, publishers, and intellectuals who promote and enrich the development of Arab literature and culture.

Collaborating with both institutions, we provided strategic event management and a comprehensive media campaign to amplify the conference’s reach and impact, while highlighting their remarkable work. Alongside the conference programming, we also planned and coordinated the SZBA delegation’s itinerary, creating a captivating and immersive cultural experience for the delegates. The tour included visits to the National Library of Spain, featuring a curated private viewing of rare Arabic manuscripts, the Library of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, and the vibrant Madrid Book Fair.

Leveraging the rich literary and musical heritage, this event provided a platform for exchange and unity between Eastern and Western cultures. Fostering cross-cultural dialogue and mutual understanding in today’s world has never been more important.
