Part supper club, part theatre show, Ground is a dining experience connecting us closer to our roots, our food and each other. Created and produced by award-winning theatre makers Trigger, audiences are invited to gather around a communal table for a culinary journey which uses locally-sourced produce to tell global stories about the food on our plate.
Each course will unearth the tangled, sometimes hidden stories around everyday ingredients led by the voices of Indigenous and traditional knowledge holders across the globe, such as India, Canada, the United States and Ghana. Diners will hear stories that confront hard truths about modern-day plant ownership, such as the American brand Texmati’s attempts to patent Basmati rice, a staple cultivated by Indian farmers for centuries.
Ground is based on two years of extensive research, collaborating with Elders, academics, scientists and artists to understand the complexities of plant use and ownership. Notable collaborators include Farida Nabourema, the Togolese human rights activist and writer currently living in exile, Sutton King, Co-Founder of the Urban Indigenous Collective, and Dr Suman Sahai, an Indian activist and founder of Gene Campaign, a leading research and advocacy organisation for issues relating to food equity.
Ground will premiere at Brighton Festival from 4 – 26 May 2024, at Earthship Brighton (a sustainable building featured on Grand Designs), accessible by a short train ride from Brighton.
