Amassed over fifty years by noted numismatist Geoffrey Cope, the collection is made up of 170 ancient Roman bronzes and over 800 British coins and medallions, with many considered to be the finest known examples in existence.
From a coin commissioned in AD130 by Emperor Hadrian to celebrate the completion of Hadrian’s Wall to a ‘testoon’ (or silver shilling) struck in 1544 of King Henry VIII modelled on the iconic portrait by Hans Holbein the Younger.
Coverage of the sale to date includes key pieces in national, regional and sector-specialist media, from The Times to Arts & Collections magazine.
The auction is a collaboration by leading coin firms Numismatica Ars Classica, Classical Numismatic Group and Numismatica Genevensis. This is Flint Culture’s third time working with Numismatica Ars Classica, having led the press campaign around the prized Eid Mar coin (article in the Financial Times) and the record-breaking sale of a gold stater from Panticapaeum (article in The Art Newspaper).
