The 2019 JCB Prize for Literature Longlist announced

The longlist for the 2019 JCB Prize for Literature has been announced, after careful selection by a panel of five judges from a vast range of submissions by writers in fourteen states.

The prize champions Indian writers from across the country, for works of fiction written either in English, or crucially for works translated from a native Indian language into English and is awarded each year to a distinguished work of fiction by an Indian writer. The prize is an amazing 25 Lakh, which equates to roughly £25,000.

The longlist, consisting of ten novels by four women and six men, published between 1st August 2018 and 31st July 2019, is dominated by debuts, presenting Indian writing full of new talent in 2019. These include a twin novel by one author and two works that have been translated from Tamil and Bagali, with the prominent theme of turbulence in the contemporary world running throughout.

The shortlist will be announced on 4th October, with the 2019 winner announced shortly afterwards on 2nd November 2019.
